It’s all about the people
This is my first (ever) blog post. Not only is this exciting for me because I am still a virgin but it is also probably a junction in my professional career.
Why a junction? For several reasons.
One of my favorite quotes is by Mark Twain “I didn’t have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.” This is a quote that I find so absolutely correct that I try and implement it in my everyday life…think before you act, concentrate and focus on the important stuff and know how to differentiate between the more important and less important.
One of the reasons I have not written a blog yet is that I wanted to think before I so I have been thinking…But enough is enough! At some stage one needs to realize that he will never have perfect information and he needs to act. At some stage you need to go through the junction even if you are not 100% sure which way to turn.
One of my big interests is (attempts to) understanding people. I have always been, and still am, most interested and curious about people. What they did, how they did it, how they think, what motivates them, what were the circumstances and characteristics that a world champion has and why are some more successful than others. I believe, and on this one I am 100% confident that I am correct, that people are what make the difference between good and great. It’s all about the people. Part of my job, and indeed the parameter that I put the most weight in my professional career, is the people. That is part of the reason I love my job. I continuously meet people of different backgrounds, each with significant achievements, and all extremely smart and intelligent from whom I can learn a lot. And I do. Especially from teams by the way, as the dynamic of teams and the interaction between team members creates an even more powerful product and outcome. I believe that just like success breeds success, exceptional people can benefit from exceptional people if they are open, willing and complementary of each other. Together, people can achieve more and the challenges of which way to turn and how fast to go become manageable. My investment philosophy is that people make the difference and I invest in people. These days, that technology is becoming more of a commodity and the apps and experience built upon the technological platform are the differentiators, I put even more emphasis on the people side of things.
Recently, we at Genesis Partners announced The Junction. The Junction is an open house for entrepreneurs that are working on an idea to not only have some office space but more importantly to be part of a community of other entrepreneurs that they can benefit from. We hope this shared and productive environment will be fruitful and fun for all. I am confident that I will get to meet even more interesting people and benefit from the interactions. We invite you all to come see and be a part of the creation. For me it will be great to meet entrepreneurs at the earliest stage, and get to meet and interact with them…no strings attached…and hopefully work with them more and more to build some great companies together. Have I said it yet that I love my job?
I will leave you with one final quote that I am sure we will see a lot of in The Junction…“The best way to predict the future is to invent it.” — Alan Kay.
